For the Love of the Lens

The exhausted expression – “a picture is worth a thousand words” is in reality an untruth. One picture may convey an encyclopaedic collection of words or it could conjure up a singular yet affecting expression.

For 45-year-old Alan Rudnicki this is no less true. The amateur photographer has spent about 26 years as a medic for the Medical Emergency Services but it is his keen, untrained eye that led him to photography as a hobby.

It was when a friend noticed his raw potential and gave him a digital camera as a gift that Alan stepped away from taking pictures on his cell phone to delving into digital photography.

When a fault with the lens put end to that, Alan surrendered to the idea of returning back to cell phone pictures but another surprise would soon come his way.

A radio station had seen some of his work posted on a social media site and contacted him with some great news – they were going to give him a digital camera complete with trimmings! Why? Because his photos were an inspiration to the City and brought joy to the people who had seen them.

Alan affirms that his photography is very much just a hobby, one that allows him to escape from the daily routine and stress of working in the EMS.

Despite the fact that his photos have been featured on various social media platforms and that articles have been written about him, Alan maintains in his humble, affable way that he has much still to learn and that he is nowhere near being professional nor does he seek any financial gain.

So why does he do it? Simply put, he loves it. And he’s elated that it makes others happy too.
