What’s the future of Electric Vehicles in SA?

Did you know the number of electric or hybrid-electric cars on SA roads is between 1 000 and 1 500? And that’s sure to increase soon, as EVs (Electric Vehicles) are becoming cheaper and battery costs are dropping.

This is where SA is at the moment with regards to Electric Vehicles:
EVs command a higher insurance premium in SA because there’s not a lot of data on accidents, repairs, or theft. There are still only a few recharging points, most are at secure shopping malls. The National Association of Automobile Manufacturers is working on the standardisation of EV charging equipment.

The DTI’s waiver of import duties for local assembly also applies to EVs. SA motor industry is requesting a reduction on import tariffs for EVs, to boost domestic sales.
