Lost Little Penguin

Caryl Zens Holland found a very lost, tired and weak penguin this morning on Melkbos beach, her first thought . . . Are there meant to be penguins on Melkbos beach or is the little guy lost? Noticing he looked weak and hardly moving, Caryl managed to get a towel around the little blue penguin and into a box while waiting for SANCCOB.

SANCCOB found no injury on the bird and have been rehydrating. The bird will be monitored for a week or so and will eventually be released when strong enough. The closest penguin colony to Melkbosstrand is Robben Island so its thought this blue penguin was probably washed ashore from there.

Caryl has named him Pedro, although we’re not quite sure whether this little blue penguin is a male or a female, who knew the only way to determine the sex is through a blood test as male and female penguins at this age look exactly alike.

Thanks to Caryl for rescuing this lost little penguin. SANCCOB will notify us when the bird is released, we’ll keep you posted.
