Drink Spiking – Be Aware

The Community Police Forum – Table View has issued a media statement warning of the dangers of drinks being spiked.

An article in the Cape Argus on 03 May 2016 reports about a 19 year old girl whose drink was presumably spiked, after she was found half naked walking in the road with men she did not know. This is alarming and frightening at the same time.

Table View SAPS would like to warn all women and give the following safety tips when going to clubs or attending ‘house parties’:

• Never take alcohol from someone you have just met, male or female, females are often accomplices.
• Buy your own drinks at the bar.
• Ensure the bartender opens the drink or pours it in front of you and not while his or her back is turned.
• Arrange your transport for the evening prior to going out.
• Don’t drink more than your limit, in fact try not to even reach your limit.

After obtaining information about rape cases reported to Table View SAPS since January 2016, some cases indicate that the victim was either under heavy influence of alcohol, or her drink was spiked. In the cases where the drinks were spiked, the victim did not know the suspect/s. In the cases where alcohol was excessively used, the victim knew the suspect.

Please be aware and be safe.
