5 Things to do on Mandela Day

Nelson Mandela International Day commemorates the lifetime of service Nelson Mandela gave to South Africa and the world. It was launched on his birthday, 18 July, in 2009 via a unanimous decision by the UN General Assembly. 67 Minutes represents his 67 years of service making the world a better place.

Here’s a few things going on around the area . . .

Table View Angels
Contribute to this local organisation with non-perishable foods. Donations can be dropped off from 10am to 6pm on 18th July at 15 Raven Street, Bloubergrise. Either R67 worth of food or R67 into the Table View Angels bank account (FNB: 62527524012 Branch: 250409) or 67 items of food from your street committee or 67 items of food from your business. These are just guidelines, Table View Angels will accept anything, even if it’s a pack of soup.

Mandela Day Beach Cleanup – Lagoon Beach
Meet at The Shred Skate Park at 8:30am if you need a lift or make your way to Lagoon Beach for 9am. Prizes for the most bags of rubbish collected off the beach, sponsored by Element South Africa & Vans. At the end of the cleanup (11am) Double Session wrist bands will be available to all who participated, so you can spend the rest of the day at The Shred.

Mandela Mosaic
Canal Walk and LEAP Science and Maths Schools have partnered once again to build a massive canned food mosaic of the late Nelson Mandela on Tuesday, 18 July at Canal Walk Shopping Centre. Volunteer your 67 minutes to build the mosaic in the heart of Canal Walk, the Food Court. Click here for more information. Various time slots to participate.

FoodForward SA Mandela Day Packing Event
Corporates can encourage staff to spend 67 minutes at the Packing Event at the Century City Conference Centre and help FoodForward SA reach 1 million meals on Mandela day! Sort and pack donated groceries into food hampers for distribution to beneficiary organisations during winter.  Click here to register.

Mandela Day #SAVEblanketchallenge
Spend your 67 minutes with the SAVE Foundation and be a part of the #SAVEblanketchallenge. Join in a fun day of volunteering either in the township of Dunoon or the settlement of Wolwerivier. Departing from Saltycrax Backpackers on 18 July at 9am. Assist in handing out soup, doing general renovations of the schools and join in fun activities for the children.
