Top 5 Interior Design trends in SA
South African décor is inspired from trends taken from around the globe, however our trends are mainly dominated on what best suits our beautiful sunny climate – South Africans love spending their time outdoors and focus on indoor-outdoor living!
SA’s top 5 that are currently trending are:
Classic Concretes
“ Back to basics “ this product is not new to the décor market but is definitely a huge hit in SA! Concrete is a durable long lasting product that is perfect for indoor and outdoor areas – implemented in seamless flooring; counter tops; tables; benches; lighting and many more décor items. It has a contemporary and timeless feel and works best mixed with elements of wood; steel and wicker. I often like to bring in the concrete element to patio areas!
Living Green Walls
With urban property development on the rise; and developers maximizing on ground and height – it does not leave one with a much of a desired garden to enjoy! These micro garden spaces have opened up the home scene to installing living green walls or vertical gardens. Another big market that has taken to this is the corporate world that loves to introduce this element into their office spaces. The benefits of vertical gardens are endless, but the top key positive traits are: Beautiful to the eye; Soothing to the mind and Environmentally friendly.
Printed Velvets
Touch is one of our greatest senses, we all love the feel of luxury, and I do love velvet! Velvet is a durable and timeless fabric has been around for centuries, but this year is reinvented with elaborate prints of bright florals and jungle fever elements! Perfect for upholstery and even more fabulous now with the glorious prints, this is great for other décor accents such as lush scatter cushions to a sofa or a bed!
Wonders of Wood
The use of wood adds extreme comfort and warmth to any home. Engineered wooden flooring has been trending for a while but I do think it is here to stay! Other décor elements where wood is a big hit, is installing wood in a “slatted” effect which is great for features in large rooms as well as room dividers in open plan areas, and it is also beautiful as wood paneling installed onto walls or incorporated into wall units (that will house Audio equipment or fireplaces). Woods trending are: Oak or Ash in natural oil stain finish.
Metallics
We have seen the trend of metallic take its journey from its tones of chrome; brass; copper; rose gold and right through to modern galvanized black steel. Brass and galvanized black steel have dominated our décor scene here in SA. These 2 metallics have been brought in as elements on furniture pieces; iron mongery and lighting.
