Happy Winter Solstice

Winter is officially here. Today marks the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year, an astronomical phenomenon that happens every year in June as the Earth orbits the Sun.

The start of meteorological winter is 1 June based on the temperature cycle and the astronomical winter is on 21 June based on the position of Earth.

The South African Weather Service reports that very cold weather will sweep across SA, with a cold front predicted by Thursday 22nd June.

According to Snow Report SA “the next frontal system expected to arrive during Thursday [22 June] morning. This second system is more significant, and is looking like it will bring good rains and snow. By lunchtime on Thursday, we expect snow to already have fallen over many of the high peaks of the Western Cape, which will continue on and off through the afternoon”.

“The front is moving fairly quickly, and will exit the Western Cape late on Thursday night and make its way into the Eastern Cape where some light snow is possible,” says Snow Report SA.
