No Safety Concerns for Koeberg

Eskom recently released a media statement amidst concerns of the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station being vulnerable after seismic activity was recorded 76km NW of Cape Town this week.

Eskom states there are no safety concerns with regard to the power station which was designed to withstand a magnitude 7 earthquake. After inspection, no damage or concerns were reported.

Koeberg was built during the late 1970s with a design life of 40 years and is scheduled for shut down in July 2024. Eskom, however, plans to extend the life of the plant by another 20 years past its original lifespan. Some believe this would be like playing ’’Russian roulette” especially with growing concerns over the power plants stability, especially in an earthquake situation.
