Ecobrick Project in Joe Slovo
Waste-ED and Cobute are supporting the 5FM Big Cape Town Clean-Up on 18th February 2017, they’ve come up with a fantastic concept to help the community of Joe Slovo.
On Saturday 18th February between 12 and 2pm The Building of team will help sort litter and make colourful and valuable Ecobricks with the community. The Ecobricks made during this gregarious clean-up will be donated towards the building of a storage space at Masikhululeke Educare Centre in Joe Slovo.
“Waste-ED and Cobute have come together to support the wish made by Nukuzola Dlamini, founder of the school in the project called “The Building of”. Besides building we wanted to raise awareness on plastic pollution and how to reduce it, in the short term.” say Candice (Waste-ED) and Clotilde (Cobute).
The Ecobrick represents a symbol for a zero waste system. Started in South America, the system involves filling empty plastic bottles with un-recyclable material like sweet wrappers, straws and chip packets, relieving them from landfill while turning them into valuable resources.
After having acquired building rights in South Africa in 2015, in 2016 the Ecobricks were used in a structure designed and funded by City of Cape Town. The Joe Slovo storage will be built using an innovative raft foundation system in recycled plastic by Geoplast, while the frame will be erected using the Cobute precast system, with more donors needed for other building elements like roof, windows and doors. “The objective behind “The Building of” is to re-connect with our environment and together think of solutions, while reducing the increasing pollution rates we, as South Africans, produce every single day”, says Clotilde.
If you would like to join in the building of the Ecobricks be at the Community Hall on 31 Mhlontlo Drive, Joe Slovo Park on Saturday 18th February between 12 and 2pm.
