Poached Abalone Shucking Areas Cleaned in Melkbos

Part of the Community Safety & Support (CSS’s) main goals is Marine Conservation and curbing abalone poaching within the Melkbosstrand area.

We have identified a specific area within the Blaauwberg Nature Reserve, primarily used as shucking areas for the poached abalone.

CSS organised a joint clean-up of this area with Blaauwberg Nature Conservation and other departments to create more awareness of the enormous abalone poaching problem we have in Melkbosstrand and the destruction it causes on Land as well as Marine ecosystems.

The poaching syndicates in South Africa are linked to organised crime and the drug industry. It does not end with the ecosystems being plundered, plastic bags and empty shells, it also ends with people dying from illegal gunshots and drug overdose.

We need to put an end to this and save our Marine ecosystems for future generations and ultimately create safer and healthy communities to live in.

To curb illegal poaching within our area we need more resources and legislation to effectively prosecute poachers diving in the Melkbosstrand area.

We would like to thank all departments who assisted with the clean-up and Melkbos Tactical Response for keeping an eye on our vehicles during the clean-up operation.

CSS is a non-profit organisation, established in March 2021 to act as a support to the SAPS.
