The New Woodbridge Island

SquareOne was appointed to design the public interface either side of Woodbridge Island and this is what they have come up with.

The bridge dating back to 1901 is the only of it’s kind in South Africa and in dire need of restoration, it has been out of use since 2007 and is protected under the National Heritage Resources Act.

Paved boardwalks, floating jetties, seating and fishing areas will allow visitors to get closer to the water, loads of space for lawns including the surrounding parking area that will be reconfigured to create more generous lawn areas along the new route towards the Lighthouse.

It is hoped construction will start as early as next year and it’s expected to take around 10 months to complete.

I think this looks great and I am really happy that this is going to take place. My brother and I used to fish off the wooden bridge when we were children. We spent many happy hours catching Harders and taking them home for my mom to fry. This was a very popular pastime with a whole row of people standing there with their lines over the side. This was back in 1960. My brother even got his photo on the front page of the Cape Argus leaning over the side, line in the water.
It will be lovely to be able to observe the abundant bird life that use this area, another thing that we used to do as children. This whole lagoon area was our playground.
