• A quarter of all flowers bought in a year are bought on Mother’s Day.

• Pink and red carnations are given to mom’s that are still alive and white ones are meant for those mother’s that have passed on.

• In most of the world’s languages, the word for “mother” begins with the letter M.

• Anna Marie Jarvis was the founder of the Mother’s Day holiday in the US. Anna never had children of her own, but wanted to carry out her own mother’s wishes of having a day just for moms. She tirelessly campaigned and on May 8th in 1914 President Wilson signed a resolution designating the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.

• The youngest mother on record was only 5 years old.

• In old Yugoslavia, Mother’s Day was celebrated the second Sunday before Christmas, children tied up their mothers, releasing her only when she had given them treats and gifts.

• There are around 2 billion mothers in the world.

• In the 1600’s England, Mothering Sunday was held on the 4th Sunday of Lent. It began with a prayer service in honour of the Virgin Mary and afterwards children would present their moms with flowers.

• A female oyster can produce over 100 million young in her lifetime.
