Security and safety Tips for Seniors!
As part of one of the South African Police Services’ national priorities, national victim’s rights week took place from 16-20 September 2019. Table View Police reached out to senior citizens and visited their homes on Wednesday, 18 September 2019.
During the visits police offered security advice at home, as well as general safety tips.
Here are some of the tips shared with the seniors, however, it is applicable to all citizens:
At home: Make sure that your alarm is activated when leaving your property; change your routine when you go out at specific times of the day; lock your doors and close the windows when at home or going out; when expecting a visit from the police or a company, ask for identification, before opening the door to the individual; have burglar bars and safety gates fitted to windows/doors; before going to bed at night, dial the police station’s telephone number, so that it is the number on your phone you call first, should you suspect suspicious activity at our property; reverse your vehicle into your drive way when you arrive home.
In your vehicle: Remove any valuable items from sight; lock all doors and close windows when driving; be alert and aware of your surroundings when driving; leave enough space between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of your, so that you can get away in an emergency situation; do not talk on your cell phone at any time whilst in your vehicle.
General safety:Join your neighbourhood watch; attend public meetings with your Community Police Forum and SAPS; if you can afford, join an armed response, who will tend to your alarms; never carry large amounts of cash; cash withdrawals and payments can be made at a till point; if in a domestic abuse relationship, report it to the police who will assist you in obtaining a protection order; report any suspicious activities in your neighbourhood to Crime Stop 08600 10111.
