10 Things to do with kids around Table View

Keeping the kids entertained can be a tough job, luckily you don’t have to travel too far from Table View to please even the grouchiest young ones. We’ve come up with 10 cool things to do with kids in the area.

1. Slot Car Racing at Race World
South Africa’s largest slot car race track is right here in the heart of Table View. Situated at the Table View Shopping Centre, Race World gives young and old the opportunity to race slot cars. 2. Pay SANCCOB a Visit
Take the kids on a children’s tour of SANCCOB in Pentz Drive and watch their delight when they interact with the penguins.  Children pay R50 and are given a 20 minute tour of the facility followed by a 40 minute activity with one of the ambassador birds. Either story time with Stubby, plastic pollution with Princess or arts and crafts with Rocky. Tours are weather permitting as the centre is not covered, and also set on availability of staff members. You can host a birthday party at SANCCOB too. Book in advance.

3. Get arty at Colour Me Crazy Den
Let the little ones bring out their inner Picasso. Colour Me Crazy Den, supplies high quality bisque pots for your children to paint and decorate using non toxic glazes in the freshest, brightest colours. The pots are glazed on site and can be collected a few days later. Moms and dads are welcome to join in the fun.

4. Visit the Cape Town Ostrich Ranch
Kids not only get to see the biggest birds they’ve ever seen, they can ride them, feed them and get to meet the tiniest ostrich in the world. Let them happily play in the sandpit and park while you browse around the curio shops or sit in the shade and enjoy a light meal from the restaurant or deli. If the weather’s good you can take a dip in the dam or watch a match on the polo field if they’re playing. Guided tours are R90 for adults, R80 for ages 7 -16 and R41 for ages 2 – 6. Open daily from 9 – 5 pm.

5. Enjoy the West Coast Nature Reserve
Take a drive up the West Coast R27 and visit the West Coast National Park. About half an hours drive from Table View you’ll find the West Coast gate. See how many birds and animals you can spot on your travels, the West Coast National Park is home to Zebra, Ostrich, Eland, Kudu, Bontebok, Duikers, Gemsbok, Steenbok, other animals including snakes and of course the healthy bird life. You can drive, park and drive, or even take the bicycles. You’ll get a map of the park at the gate. Tortoises have right of way. The West Coast National Park is open daily from 7am to 6pm. R45 per adult and R22 for children under 12.

6. Go Sandboarding on the Atlantis Dune Reserve
15 Minutes up the West Coast Road, kids can experience the thrill of sand boarding. Get a group of kids together and head up the R27 to the Atlantis sand dunes where the team at SunScene will give the kids a lengthly lesson on how to sandboard. Loads of fun and they’ll no doubt be exhausted afterwards. Not just for kids either, mom and dad can join in the fun too.

7. Join in a Beach Cleanup
Cape Town Beach Cleanup hosts various beach cleanups on Saturday mornings. Get the kids involved helping the guys keep the beaches clean. Bags and gloves are provided. Beach cleanups run on the first Saturday of every month starting at 10am and last 90 minutes. Bags and gloves provided. Look out for the blue or green banners on the beach.

8. Play in the Rock pools on the beachfront
Check for low tide, pack the bucket, spade and fishing net and head on down to the rock pools on the beachfront. Don’t forget the towels, sunscreen, hats, umbrella and picnic basket. Let the kids explore the sea life in the rock pools. Weather permitting of course.

9. Visit the local library
Table View Library just off Pentz Drive has Story Time on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 – 11am. Children can listen to a story, enjoy a little singalong and thereafter participate in a bit of arts and crafts. There are holiday programmes during the school holidays too, you’ll need to pop in to the library or give them a call to check what’s on the calendar. Free of charge.

10. Playtime at Gazoome Play Centre
Kids can play for the day at Gazoome Play Centre in Milnerton next to CTM, Tuesday to Friday between 9 and 5pm. Parents can have a cup of coffee and cake while overlooking the kids in the play area. If you need to pop out and run an errand, the qualified and capable staff will look over the little ones for you.
