South African Proteaceae is represented in all 9 provinces of the country, from Cape Agulhas at its southernmost tip, to northern Limpopo. Its habitat is remarkably variable, from windswept, sandy coastal flats just above sea level (forms of Protea cynaroides) to inaccessible basalt cliffs 2300m high in the Kwa-Zulu Natal Drakensberg (Protea nubigena), but it is in the unique fynbos vegetation of the south-western and southern Cape where its greatest diversity can be found. Specialist grower Arnelia will be visiting, telling us a little bit more about the magnificence of our local flora.
